The Kentucky Derby and Fried Rattlesnake

My husband killed a five foot rattlesnake Saturday morning.
Thank goodness he did not come upon it while walking.

Friends gathered in our deer lease "casita" to
watch the Kentucky Derby. We all wished we
had planned ahead and served Mint Julips... next year!
That evening, I served fried rattlesnake (backstrap only) to
the group as we enjoyed the open fire in the huge grilling pit.
Not everyone ate it but more than I thought.
Tasted like... you guessed it... chicken!
I'll post the directions on Foodie Friday.

I was raised in rattlesnake country..and have seen them that size and only one larger. I never could bring myself to eat rattlesnake. Not sure why but I'm just not fond of snakes in any way.
When I learned at a very young age that the babies were as venomous and the grown ones...and that they, so I was told, sometime bite themselves or another snake and can be poisonous to eat.. Not sure that was true..but never cared to find out!
That was some snake he killed! Good job! So, did you save the skin to tack on a board? They used to do that where I lived. :)

Sorry, but I had to not even look...I hate them! And I would never eat them just because I hate them...even if they do taste like chicken! EEK! Come say hi :D

Wow! Some snake!

John was actually hunting in your neck of the woods this weekend, so we didn't have our mint julips. Reagan and I watched the race though. I love watching the Derby. There's just something about it. :)

OMG, that is just so scary! Your hubby is a brave man. I don't think I could eat it and your brave just to cook it. Amazing story.

Oh Karen, I know people say it tastes like chicken, I'll never know! What fun to watch the Derby with your friends out at the lease!!

Your grandfather, Daddy B, loved horse racing, especially the Kentucky Derby. I watched it too and thought of him yesterday.

No rattlesnake for me, fried or otherwise!

Great that your brave hubby killed a rattlesnake but even more awesome that you cooked him up! I've never tried it but I certainly would have if I was in your group. Anything fried gets my vote. I probably won't need the recipe as there aren't too many rattlers in Minnesota! :-)
